Garmin Wiki:Editing guidelines
📋 Official Policy
This page documents an official Garmin Wiki policy. Please discuss proposed changes on the talk page.
This page describes how to write content for Garmin Wiki. Following these guidelines helps maintain consistency and quality across all articles.
Core Principles
Write Neutrally
All wiki articles must be written from a neutral point of view (NPOV). This means:
- State facts, not opinions — "The Fenix 8 has a 1.4-inch display" not "The Fenix 8 has an amazing display"
- Avoid promotional language — Don't use words like "best," "revolutionary," "must-have," or "game-changing"
- No first-person — Don't write "I think" or "We recommend" — let facts speak for themselves
- Present multiple perspectives when relevant — if experts disagree, acknowledge it
Be Factual
Everything on the wiki should be verifiable:
- Use reliable sources for all claims
- Prefer Garmin.com as the primary source for specifications
- Don't include unconfirmed rumors or speculation in wiki articles
- If information cannot be verified, don't include it
Stay Encyclopedic
Wiki articles are reference material, not:
- Blog posts or opinion pieces
- News articles (that's what GarminRumors.com is for)
- Reviews or buying guides
- Marketing copy
- Forum discussions
What NOT to Write
| Don't Write | Write Instead |
|---|---|
| "The Fenix 8 is Garmin's best watch ever" | "The Fenix 8 was released in August 2024" |
| "I love the Body Battery feature" | "Body Battery estimates energy levels throughout the day" |
| "You should definitely buy this watch" | "The watch is available at Garmin.com and authorized retailers" |
| "Rumor has it the Fenix 9 will have..." | (Don't include unconfirmed information) |
| "This feature sucks" | (If there are documented issues, cite sources) |
Citing Garmin.com
When documenting features or specifications:
- Go to the official product page on Garmin.com
- Use the exact terminology Garmin uses
- Link to the source when possible
- Include the date you accessed the information
For more details, see Garmin Wiki:Citing sources.
Speculation and Rumors
Speculation and unverified rumors do not belong in wiki articles.
- Don't include speculation or predictions about future products
- Don't include unverified rumors from anonymous sources
- Predictions about future features belong on GarminRumors.com, not here
However, factual leaks with hard evidence are acceptable. For example, if a product like the Fenix 8 Pro is accidentally published on Garmin's official website before its announcement, that can be documented as a verified leak. The key distinction is verifiable evidence from official sources versus speculation and hearsay.
Editing Existing Content
When editing existing articles:
- Don't remove factual information without good reason
- Improve clarity without changing meaning
- Add sources to unsourced claims when you can find them
- Fix errors promptly when you spot them
- Discuss major changes on the article's Talk page first
