The MARQ Collection (also referred to as MARQ Gen 1 or MARQ) is a series of luxury GPS smartwatches announced on March 13, 2019, in celebration of Garmin's 30th anniversary. [1] The collection represents Garmin's entry into the luxury watch market, combining premium materials with the company's GPS and fitness tracking technology.

The original MARQ series launched with five variants—Aviator, Driver, Captain, Expedition, and Athlete—each designed for a specific lifestyle and featuring unique bezels, straps, and software features. A sixth variant, the MARQ Golfer, was added in June 2020. Garmin added the MARQ Commander, a tactical variant with stealth design and built-in topographical maps, on October 1, 2019. [2] [3]

At launch, Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales, stated: "For the past 30 years, we've created products that have fueled people's passions. And now, we have reimagined the tool watch with MARQ, a series of extraordinary smart instruments, authentic in every detail, an inspiration for new adventures."

Overview

The MARQ Collection was built on the Fenix 5 Plus platform, sharing its core software features while adding variant-specific functionality and premium materials. The watches incorporated elements from Garmin's aviation (D2), marine (Quatix), and outdoor (Fenix) product lines, unified under a common luxury design language. [4]

All MARQ watches shared common specifications including a 46mm titanium case, domed sapphire crystal lens, 32GB storage (double the Fenix 5 Plus), and the Sony GPS chipset that debuted across Garmin's 2019 product line. The collection was positioned above the Fenix series in Garmin's product hierarchy, with prices ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.

Design Philosophy

Garmin described the MARQ series as "modern tool watches"—timepieces designed for specific pursuits while functioning as everyday luxury accessories. Each variant featured:

  • Titanium construction — Lightweight yet durable case material used across all variants
  • Ceramic bezel inlays — Scratch-resistant bezels with variant-specific markings and colors
  • Domed sapphire crystal — Curved lens formed under extreme heat and pressure for durability
  • Variant-specific straps — Materials chosen to complement each watch's intended use case
  • Unique watch faces — Default faces designed to highlight each variant's specialized features

Platform and Software

The MARQ series shared its software foundation with the Fenix 5 Plus and Forerunner 945, including:

  • Full multisport tracking with detailed maps for the purchase region
  • Offline music storage with Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music, and iHeartRadio support
  • Garmin Pay contactless payments
  • Pulse Ox blood oxygen monitoring
  • Body Battery energy monitoring
  • Training Status, Training Load, and recovery metrics
  • Heat and altitude acclimation tracking
  • Incident detection and safety alerts

Retail Distribution

Garmin positioned the MARQ collection as a luxury product and initially limited distribution to high-end watch retailers rather than traditional Garmin dealers or sporting goods stores. The company aimed to place MARQ alongside brands like TAG Heuer and Breitling in jewelry stores and department store watch departments.

In the United States, early retail availability included Macy's department stores and select authorized watch dealers.

Service and Warranty

The MARQ collection included enhanced service terms compared to standard Garmin products:

  • 2-year full warranty
  • 5-year parts serviceability from date of purchase
  • Battery replacement available through both Garmin and authorized dealers

Reception

The MARQ collection received mixed reviews, with critics praising the build quality and feature set while questioning the value proposition compared to Garmin's less expensive watches with similar functionality.

DC Rainmaker

DC Rainmaker, in his in-depth review of the MARQ Athlete, noted: "Here's the thing about the MARQ series: Either you think it's a silly waste of money, or you think it's perfect for your wrist and lifestyle. There's likely little chance anyone is going to shift someone from one camp to another."

Regarding the value proposition, DC Rainmaker observed: "The new Garmin FR945 at $599 contains every single bit of software functionality as the MARQ Athlete. Seriously, all of it (and has better battery life). Instead, buying something like the MARQ series is because you want the look of it."

On the watch's performance, DC Rainmaker concluded: "From a functional standpoint – the MARQ Athlete has largely been working great for me these last 5 months. Perfect though? No, definitely not. But pretty darn good. Certainly as good or better than any other sports-focused watch on the market."

DC Rainmaker also suggested areas for improvement: "I do think Garmin needs to do more to differentiate this product from others in their lineup... The mapping I mentioned earlier is a great example of that. For this market and this price point Garmin should absolutely be providing detailed maps globally included. It shouldn't even be a discussion point, it should just be there."

Wareable

Wareable reviewed the MARQ Athlete and highlighted the tension between price and functionality: "The score we've given the Marq Athlete doesn't reflect how it performs as a watch. It does everything you'd expect it to do well and it does look great. The problem is that it feels hard to justify paying more than the price of Garmin's already-expensive Fenix 5 series model, just because it has a more unique design." [6]

On the display, Wareable noted: "That screen is a bit of deal breaker when Garmin is billing this as a luxury watch, but if it can find way to match up the Marq with a more impressive screen, it would make a huge difference."

Wareable described the MARQ as "the company's most interesting watch series in recent years" and noted that "the Marq represents a rather ambitious move by Garmin to break into the luxury watch market, putting itself alongside the Tag Heuers and Breitlings of this world."

aBlogtoWatch

aBlogtoWatch reviewed the MARQ Driver variant, focusing on its viability as a daily-wear timepiece: "The Garmin Marq GPS smartwatch is the latest high-tech connected wearable from the accomplished hardware and electronics manufacturer — and it is the brand's most serious attempt at creating a product for daily wear." [7]

The review praised the watch's capabilities: "Garmin convinced me (and others) that the Marq is a serious, professional-grade tool for a variety of boating, flying, exercising, driving, racing, and general competition/tracking purposes."

aBlogtoWatch noted the watch's strength in standalone functionality: "The Marq really begins to blossom when you consider its native abilities and functionality. For example, the watch has its own very precise GPS antenna, as well as on-board maps software."

ZDNET

ZDNET reviewed the MARQ Golfer variant, giving it a 9.5/10 rating. The review noted: "People spend thousands of dollars on luxury watches and the Garmin MARQ series competes in this high end watch market. It is not an alternative to an Apple Watch, Fitbit, or other $500 smart or sports watch." [8]

On build quality, ZDNET observed: "The MARQ Golfer is priced at $1,850 and the high-quality fit, finish, and materials make it feel worthy of that price."

The review concluded: "The Garmin MARQ Golfer is extremely well built, looks fantastic, and lifted a serious load while out on the course. It may be the perfect accessory for the serious golfer who also wants a luxury watch on the wrist."

Common Criticisms

Across reviews, common criticisms included:

  • Display resolution — Multiple reviewers noted the 240 x 240 pixel display felt inadequate for a luxury-priced watch
  • Price-to-feature ratio — The identical software functionality to the $599 Forerunner 945 made the premium difficult to justify for some
  • Regional map limitations — Maps were limited to the purchase region rather than global coverage

Legacy

The original MARQ collection established Garmin's presence in the luxury watch market and demonstrated demand for premium GPS smartwatches. The collection was succeeded by the MARQ (Gen 2) in October 2022, which introduced an AMOLED display option, updated design language, and additional variants.

The MARQ series influenced subsequent Garmin products by validating the market for premium materials and variant-specific designs at higher price points.
